I have been going around blogs in Tanzania, especially these niche blogs that are all about reporting current events, I sincerely don’t like these blogs personally, but they have caught my attention these few days. When I say catch my attention, I’m not talking in a good way, but a way that annoys me because all these blogs do the same thing, most of them recycle the same news very few have original content, Tanzania bloggers do not understand the full meaning of blogging, if they did, with the time they spend publishing all those posts they would have been making a whole lot more money.
With so many blogs out there emerging on a daily basis, I’m going to have to focus on a few blogs, especially few of the most known blogs in Tanzania, blogs such as “issamichuzi.blogspot.com”, “djchoka.blogspot.com”,FULL SHANGWE BLOG , just to mention a few.
One thing you will notice in all of those above mentioned blogs, is how far down the content is. I mean really, I don’t know if these are blogs or ad management services. “issamichuzi.blogspot.com” is considered the best blog by most people, on my part its one of the worst blogs in Tanzania. It has, take or less 20 adverts at the top of the page, another 15 ads at the sidebar, I know advertisers think they are getting exposure due to the popularity if IssaMichuzi, but i’m going to disappoint them by saying how worthless all these ads are, and how worthless they are making the blog look.
To me stacking all those ads looks as if the blog is worthless, meaning putting an advert on these blogs is so cheap that a blog has 35 adverts on 1 page, seriously. If a blog really has that much traffic it should have a very high advertising rate that 1 advert can be worth all those 35 plus adverts, people that want to advertise should align and wait for the current advertiser’s contract to run out, I don’t even think they have contracts.
Why advertising on these blogs is a waste of time you ask?
I. First of all, it’s in Tanzania, loading that blog on a normal Computer, with a normal modem is hell.
It takes minutes to load a blog, I mean its hosted on Google’s servers for crying out loud, it shouldn’t take that long. It took me almost 2minutes for the whole website to load, and I have a very fast internet, trust me it’s really fast. I’m sure, the blogs loose overall traffic after putting all these ads, for people who can’t wait that long don’t wait, they just browse away from that blog.
II. Content is really far down,
I’m now asking myself if they blog for advertisers or do they actually blog for readers to get to read their content, it’s a mystery for me. People or readers, yes those people advertisers target, get into these blog for content the ads should be an added or extra for them.
III. The ads are just very huge
These blogs probably have Google Adsense ads too. For those who know these ads Look at those ad sizes(if not you can google ‘adsense sizes’ photos), those are standard ad sizes ,I don’t think if even one of them is that huge. None of them are 980 pixels width by 360 pixels high, I mean that’s half a website page. And having 20 of them is just absurd.
Adsense AD sizes
IV. Nobody Probably click your ads
For some, just the view is probably enough but most have links on those ads and want people to click them to get the full message of the advert, I mean an image puts across a message but people need convincing to get what you are selling. I’m sure very few people click those ads because people just scroll down looking for content, if the ads were carefully placed the readers would click them after seeing the content they were looking for, or after realizing the content isn’t actually what they were looking for.
V. These blogs are not mobile compatible
Imagine on an tablet or phone, having to go down 20 ads, 980 pixels wide by 360 pixels high. A standard mobile phone is 320 pixels wide, a standard tablet is 600-700 pixels wide, scrolling through those adverts is just impossibly frustrating, so there goes the mobile users ever seeing your adverts.
VI. Nobody is going to notice your advert
Simple and clear, 35 adverts, I don’t have time to waste looking at all of them. The teen you probably want to come to your event would rather be on facebook, the adult you want to get to know your product well has life to deal with.
I wouldn’t advise anybody to waste their time advertising on these blogs or website that have these type of ad formats or services. Don’t advertise on any website with already more than 3-5 adverts, if it has a lot of traffic it won’t be there after a while, and people probably won’t notice your ad with those stacks of adverts.
If you want your money’s worth, you better off signing up for Google adwords, finding a channel of that blog you want to advertise on and paying Google to advertise your product on those blogs. Google lets you pay after somebody has clicked your advert if not it stays their services till your budget runs out.
Or you can ask for a report on click throughs, meaning if you insist advertising on these blogs, let them give you a report of how many outbound links have been clicked, then you will see how many times somebody has noticed your advert.
For the blogger
Your blog has traffic, its worth a lot more than all those adverts put together are paying, don’t just take whatever to put up there. Find the highest bidder and put up
I also would advise them to have a featured post section at the top of the blog, find someone who can put that up a sliding featured post section at the top of your blog, and charge for those featured posts. A sliding featured post section will also get you paid if you want to make more money.
